Tips for caregivers during the holidays

December 9, 2011

December snuck up on us once again and that means holidays and growing to-do lists and fewer hours in the day. You most likely are feeling somewhat overwhelmed and stressed by your list of holiday tasks and are looking for the break that the New Year will bring.

If on top of everything else you are a caregiver, you are undoubtedly fighting that “burnout” feeling. You not only have your own needs to care for, but those of the one you are caring for as well. It’s important to keep in mind the expectations you have for yourself and others.

Take some time to check that you’re taking care of yourself as well as others. It’s important to make sure you’re paying attention to your feelings and stress level. You can also try some of the following things:

  • Don’t be afraid to modify traditions.
  • Remember you can take some things off your list.
  • Ask for help.
  • Prioritize the things you and your family find important.
  • Take time to remember loved ones who have passed.
  • Surround yourself with people who care and support you.

Above all else, remember that you are making a difference as a caregiver and that there are going to be ups and downs.

We hope that you enjoy a wonderful holiday season and take time to slow down and spend time with loved ones and to remember those that are no longer with you. This is a special time when memories are made and remembered.

Please feel free to contact your local Regency office for support or help during this season. We’re always here for you.
